About All Saints Episcopal Church (see our timeline here)

The earliest involvement of the Episcopal Church in East Lansing resulted from a need to serve Michigan State University students. This need, which was met by St. Paul's Church in Lansing, eventually led to the organization of a club for the Episcopal students and, in the late 1930's, the Canterbury Club. Facilities became a necessity and, in 1939, the Vestry of St. Paul's purchased and remodeled the Sigma Kappa house at 445 Abbott Road. Here, the Episcopal Student Center was dedicated on October 26, 1940.

Continued growth eventually required a move, so the Vestry of St. Paul's purchased the Sigma Nu House at 444 Abbott Road. By this time, a move toward independence from St. Paul's began, and on February 22, 1953, seventy-one members of the congregation met to sign a formal Declaration of Intention, which resulted in the formation of All Saints Protestant Episcopal Church, East Lansing.

The congregation first met at Bailey School and, later, at the University Lutheran Church, as efforts began to build a facility. The current church facility was ready for services by February 1956. Later on, building fund drives and much work by church members led to further expansion. Throughout its history All Saints has maintained close ties and a sense of responsibility to the University community, the Episcopal chaplains and MSU students.

East Lansing is part of a metropolitan area of approximately 450,000 centered around the capital city of Michigan -- Lansing. The parish is a diverse congregation of middle and upper income individuals, couples, and families, including professionals, educators, technical, managerial and sales consultants, and retirees. We pride ourself on being inclusive. For a detailed look at the area's community and demographics, please see our community profile.

Five prior rectors have served the All Saints congregation: The Rev. Gordon Jones, The Rev. Edward Roth, The Rev. William Eddy, The Rev. Edward Rice and The Rev. Caroline Stacey. Rev. Katherine "Kit" Carlson began her tenure as sixth rector in February, 2007.
